CES – Trading The Future of Consumer Electronics

Executives, journalists and self described computer geeks are all on their way to Nevada right now – eager for the inside scoop on the hottest tech trends.

The Computer Electronics Show or CES kicks off this week in Las Vegas and with 1.5 million square feet of exhibition space, more than a few gadgets will be competing for your attention.

What should investors be watching?

The fast money will be paying great attention to potential iPad killers after blockbuster sales of the Apple’s tablet inspired rivals to rush their gadgets to market, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

"We’re going to see real competition for the iPad in the next week," Munster says, "and other other devices are going to win share."

According to a Reuters report some of the biggest competition will likely come from Motorola, Lenovo and Toshiba.

Another key item will be devices that bridge the computer with the TV.

The battle will pit heavyweights including Samsung, Sony and LG Electronics as well as Google , Netflix and Apple , all against one another as they all fight to make their technology the standard.

Unlike tablets, the fight over the connected living room lacks a dominant player -- or even a common method for delivering content.

Also during CES, the traders will be listening for commentary.

The major keynotes at CES will include Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg.

There will be particular interest in Ballmer's address, following reports that Microsoft will unveil a version of its software that runs for the first time on processors designed by UK-based ARM Holdings . Meanwhile, Verizon has said it would use CES as a platform to talk about its first phones for services based on Long Term Evolution, a technology standard with which Verizon is currently upgrading its network.
