Nicole aka Snooki got $32,000 to show up for an hour on campus and speak to students. The Nobel Laureate and very accomplished Ms.Morrison is slated to speak at graduation—she will be paid $30,000 or 6.25 percent less than Ms. Snooki. And if you consider that graduation is most likely a minimum of 2 hours, the pay disparity grows even larger. But wait, there's more! As part of the "Writers at Neward Reading Series," Ms. Morrison will also be appearing on campus for free!
Acclaimed American novelist Toni Morrison, winner of both the Nobel and Pulitzer prizes, will discuss and read from her works on April 26 during a free public program at Rutgers University, Newark.
College should be that moment when young people are imbued with a sense of wonder and hope. To be sure, Snooki is a wonder but I'm not sure she can really deliver the hope. Both speakers were paid loosely out of tuition dollars which means, all students on campus paid for both guests—the Snookster was booked by a student's group, Ms. Morrison was chosen by the adults on campus.
The next time you are looking for America's moral compass, the message here is loud and clear: "Study hard, but party harder." And the messenger is Snooki.
