Code Wars: Inside the Cyber Threat

Cyber-criminals have brought the websites of the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the New York Stock Exchange, and the South Korean government to a halt. After hackers breached Sony’s PlayStation Network, the company reported that the personal information of 77 million of its customers – including their credit card data – was jeopardized. In China and Russia, cyber warriors are at the ready, poised to strike with the newest form of warfare, where conventional rules don’t apply.

In an original one-hour documentary reported by Correspondent Melissa Lee, CNBC investigates the global cyber threat, and explores the vulnerabilities we face as a nation at a time when our military infrastructure, power grids, water supply, and banking system are all online and subject to attack.

Lee takes viewers to the front lines of America’s cyber defense with a behind-the-scenes look inside the top-secret National Cybersecurity and Communications Integration Center, profiles Chinese hackers who’ve tried to penetrate American government and corporate interests, and unravels the mystery behind Stuxnet, perhaps the most sophisticated and vexing computer virus ever deployed.

According to government figures, U.S. companies have lost more than a trillion dollars in intellectual property to cyber attacks. Cybersecurity has become a top priority of the Obama administration, and scores of companies are banking on the fact that more money will need to be spent to defend against cyber threats. CNBC tells the stories of the hackers who pose these threats, the companies that protect your information, the cyber-sleuths who’ve uncovered the biggest security breaches, and the government struggling to defend against this 21st century warfare.
