Joe Terranova: Amazon a ‘Buy’ on Earnings, But Not Now

Shares of Amazon landed in the spotlight Tuesday evening.

After the bell, the company reported a drop in profit for the first quarter as its investment in new businesses ate into earnings, but the online retailer's revenue forecast beat Wall Street forecasts.

”Higher expenses are concerning investors,” explained Fast Money host Melissa Lee with “operating costs jumping over $3 billion since the same period last year.

The results seemed to confirm that Amazon had increased spending significantly, on things like new distribution centers, online video-streaming services and marketing for its Kindle e-reader.

By the numbers, the online retail giant reported first-quarter earnings of $201 million, or 44 cents a share. Amazon earned $299 million, or 66 cents a share, during the same period a year earlier.

Sales for the most recent quarter rose 38 percent to $9.86 billion, up from $7.13 billion last year.

The company was seen earning 61 cents a share on revenue of $9.53 billion, according to a consensus estimate from Thomson Reuters.

What’s the trade?

Joe Terranova thinks the stock is a buy but not until August, as a Holiday play. In other words he doesn’t see Amazon as a tech trade, so much as a retail trade. (Often times traders will buy retailers in August ahead of the all-important Holiday shopping season.

Also, Terranova thinks the increase in operating costs is long-term bullish. He calls it “the right strategic development” as an investment in future growth.

Tim Seymour says, “if you liked Amazon yesterday, you should like it today.” In other words, the money they’re spending on build out shouldn’t be surprising or concerning.

Karen Finerman finds the top line growth impressive. However, she still balks at the stock’s valuations.
