Google in Talks to Buy InterDigital: Report

Google is in preliminary talks to buy InterDigital, a wireless technology company, according to a report from the Wall Street Journal, which cited sources close to the discussions.

InterDigital had said that it was exploring a potential sale on Tuesday. This announcment caused the company's stock to rise by 28 percent.

Google's interest was piqued by the recent $4.5 billion acquisition of by a group of companies including Apple, Microsoft and Research in Motion . As part of the deal, the trio purchased about 6,000 Nortel patents.

The $4.5 billion purchase price was five times Google's bid of $900 million for Nortel.
