Active Bear ETF: Tool for Shorting Stocks

Negative on the rally? Or bullish but looking for a hedge? There’s an ETF for that!

It’s the AdvisorShares Active Bear ETF, which only makes negative bets on stocks and bonds.

Trading under the ticker symbol HDGE, the Bear ETF holds a wide range of short positions which currently include:
Goodyear Tire
Constant Contact
Hanesbrands
Salesforce.com

In April and May, the fund soared 19% as the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index fell 7%.

Brad Lamensdorf Co-Manager of Active Bear ETF explains that as he selects stocks, he first goes through the S&P 1500 and then pares the list down to the 200 names that seem vulnerable.

He then applies ‘the secret sauce’ and drops that number down to 100. “From there, those are the names that we either short or plan to short,” he says.
