Editor's Note: Apple unveiled its iPad mini Tuesday at an event in San Jose, California.

The smaller version of the iPad will be a direct competitor with other 7-inch tablets likeGoogle's Nexus 7 and Amazon's Kindle Fire HD.


The tech giant also introduced a smaller version of its MacBook Pro with Retina Display, a new Mac mini and a thinner iMac.

2:09 P.M.: Interesting question outstanding: what will happen to all the 3rd generation iPads still out there in inventory? Will anyone want them with the old connector and old technology?

2:08 P.M.: The new iPad mini is available for pre-order this Friday, Wifi versions ship a week later, cellular ships two weeks later first in US, then around the world (hard to be clear on exact dates here).

2:07 P.M.: Pricing for the iPad mini starts at 16GB for $329. The iPad 2 will cost $399, iPad 4th generation is $499 (all starting prices).

2:04 P.M.: He is showing a commercial for new iPad mini. (This sounds like an iPad 2, scaled down, internals-wise. Interesting. Until today, Apple has been selling that for $400.)

The iPad mini also has 10 hours of battery life.

Apple: iPad mini display is 35 percent larger display area than 7" tablets.

1:57 P.M.: Touting it for content creation as well as consumption, even GarageBand.

1:56 P.M.: he iPad mini, it has 7.9-inch display, same resolution as original iPad (pre-retina display).

1:48 P.M.: Schiller: talking about 4th generation iPad. The new chip, A6X (this is not expected. New full-size iPad) twice the graphics performance.

1:47 P.M.: Cook: iPad also taking business market by storm.

"We are just getting started," Cook said. "We're not taking our foot off the gas."

1:45 P.M.: ook: "Earlier this year we introduced iBooks textbooks, now available for 80 percent of core curriculum...Books created with iBooks authors now available in more than 2,500 U.S. classrooms."

Today, the latest version will feature: New templates, embedded fonts, directly inserted mathematical expressions, multitouch widgets, easily update books.

1:43 P.M.: Cook: "One of the things so amazing to us is how quickly iPad has been embraced in education."

1:42 P.M.: "Two weeks ago we sold our 100 millionth iPad... In just 2.5 years we sold more iPads in the June quarter than any PC maker sold of their entire PC lineup," Cook said.

Cook said the iPad accounts for over 90 percent of web traffic (I believe this is according to Net Applications).

1:40 P.M.: Cook: "Next I'd like to talk about iPad," he said.

1:39 P.M.: owest configuration prices at $1299, next, $1799 .... Not sure if those are the prices with Fusion Drives .... Might not be.

1:37 P.M.: Up to 768GB of flash, 3TB hard drive in iMac. Also, there is a new storage option called the Fusion Drive. It is 128GB of flash, with a 1 or 3 terabyte hard drive. The operating system is tuned to use both, and intelligently put the most used data and applications into flash (the latest high-performance enterprise storage systems work this way).

1:34 P.M.: The display on the new iMac is 45 percent thinner. It comes in 21.5-inch and 27- inch versions, it has a fully laminated display to make images look like they're sitting closer to the surface.

1:31 P.M.: The new iMac is 5mm thin at the edge (It's worth noting that it bows out at the back, so it's not 5mm all the way across the middle of the back).

1:27 P.M.: Mac mini: "You knew there'd be something called mini in this presentation, didn't you?" Schiller said.

1:24 P.M.: he price is $1699, it comes with 128GB flash (It is $500 cheaper than the first Retina MacBook pro, 15-inch version).

1:23 P.M.: nside, the new MacBook Pro has been reengineered. Intel Ivy Bridge inside, i5 or i7, 8GB of memory standard (note, this is memory, not storage ....there is more storage available).

1:19 P.M.: Retina display on the new MacBook Pro 13-inch. It has 2560x1600 resolution, almost twice as many pixels as an HDTV.

He says the 13-inch MacBook Pro is the number one selling Mac.

"We're going to take our best product and make it better," Schiller said.

New 13-inch MacBook Pro .... .75 inches thin, 20 percent thinner, weighs just over 3.5 pounds, almost a pound lighter.

About the Mac: It has been outgrowing the PC market for six years straight. Mac is now number one laptop and desktop in the US.

"We are not standing still. We've got some great stuff to show this morning," Cook said.

1:13 P.M.: There are more than 1.5 million books in the iBookstore, 400 million downloads.

Today, a new version with continuous scrolling (more like a webpage) is being introduced. User can tap to share quotes via social media. Now will support more than 40 languages.

1:10 P.M.: ustomers have shared more than 70 million photos with shared photo streams and have downloaded 275,000 iPad apps in app store. Customers have downloaded 35 billion apps from the app store.

1:08 P.M.: ook: 125 million documents in the cloud now through Apple's service. Customers have sent 300 billion (yes, billion) iMessages, 28,000 per second.

1:07 P.M.: Cook says more than 200 million devices on iOS 6, fastest upgrade in history to Apple's knowledge.

1:06 P.M.: Cook: At the same time as the iPhone 5, we introduced new iPods. These are off to a fantastic start. He's quoting a review from the Verge. Apple has already sold more that three million units of the total iPod lineup, he says.
