Federal Reserve chairman

Jerome H. Powell was named chairman of the Federal Reserve's board of governors in February 2018. With this appointment, he became the 16th person serve as chair of the U.S. central bank. He was sworn in on May 23, 2022, for a second term, which ends on May 15, 2026.

Powell has worked as both an investment banker and as a lawyer. He served President George H.W. Bush as assistant secretary and undersecretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. From 1997 through 2005, he was a partner at Carlyle Group.

He joined the Federal Reserve's board of governors in 2012 and served in this capacity until being named chair. From 1997 through 2005.

During his time as the nation's top financial policymaker, Powell has had to navigate the economic challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic and the supply disruptions that followed it. After he began his second term, Powell's attention turned to combating rising inflation, which prompted a series of interest rate hikes.
