In 2018, Brent Underwood, a 31-year-old hostel owner, bought a deserted mining town in California's Inyo Mountains named Cerro Gordo for $1.4 million with his business partner, Jon Bier. Their vision: to turn the town into a luxury destination for worldwide travelers.
