Life insurance can be an important part of a financial plan but can be expensive.
Term life insurance tends to be much more affordable than permanent life insurance, including whole life and universal life insurance policies. With term life insurance, you're covered for a set number of years. After that period, the policy expires.
To find the best cheap life insurance, CNBC Select looked at term life insurance policies that offer affordable premiums, good customer service, and a strong record of financial strength. Here are the top cheap life insurance companies to consider.

Pros
- Simple online application and quotes
- Coverage starts at $5 per month
Cons
- No riders available
Who's this for: Ladder is an excellent option for those wanting to skip the hassle of a medical exam and buy their coverage entirely online. Ladder's premiums are also relatively affordable, with policies starting at just $5 per month.

FAQs
What is the cheapest life insurance?
Term life insurance is generally the cheapest type of life insurance. With this coverage, your policy is in force for a set number of years and expires if you survive that term.
How much is life insurance per month?
Life insurance costs vary based on your age, gender, health status, and how much coverage you're buying. According to Policygenius data, a healthy 30-year-old male would pay about $30 a month for a $500,000 term life insurance policy, while a 30-year-old female would pay about $23 for the same coverage.
How much life insurance should I have?
When deciding how much life insurance to get, a general rule of thumb is to choose a death benefit that's at least 10 times your annual income. However, there are other methods of calculating how much life insurance you need to help you find a more personalized number.
Bottom line
Getting life insurance doesn't have to break the bank. Though it doesn't build cash value, term life insurance can be an inexpensive way to make sure your family would be covered if you weren't there to support them, and many companies make it both simple and affordable to get coverage.
