Trading The Globe: Afghanistan Could Become Saudi Arabia of Lithium

U.S. geologists have discovered vast mineral wealth in Afghanistan, possibly amounting to $1 trillion.

According to the New York Times, the find is enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself.

The previously unknown deposits are so big (they) could eventually transform the nation into one of the most important mining centers in the world.

An internal Pentagon memo, for example, states that Afghanistan could become the “Saudi Arabia of lithium,” a key raw material in the manufacture of batteries for laptops and BlackBerrys, the paper says.

Can you trade it?

I wouldn’t run out and try to find ways to play this, says Dennis Gartman. We’re easily 10 years away from getting these resources out of the ground in Afghanistan.

Although you can’t trade Afghanistan, I do think you can look at companies that go into volatile places looking for minerals, counsels Tim Seymour. Those names include Ivanhoe, First Quantum and AngloGold.

SOCCER STIMULUS

When you think of mining plays you probably think of South Africa; its gold and diamond deposts are world famous. However some investors are turning bullish on this far away nation as a rapidly growing economy -- especially in the wake of the World Cup.

How can you game it?

If you want to play South Africa I’d look at the EZA, counsels Tim Seymour as well as Standard Bank and Sasol .
