While governments and local councils may be expected to be prepared to deal with terrorist attacks, extreme weather conditions and contagious diseases, a potential zombie attack might not be top of the list.

However, following information released from a Freedom of Information request, one local English council admitted that it has in place a "top secret" plan that could be used to repel a "Night of the Living Dead" type of invasion by flesh eating zombies, the Guardian newspaper reported.

A letter sent by a concerned local resident, Mr P Store, about what provisions existed within the city to deal with a zombie attack, led Bristol City Council to release its contingency plans to deal with Zombies, according to the Guardian.

The paper reported that Peter Holt, service director of communication and marketing, wrote back to Store: "In response to your request for details of Bristol city council's contingency plans for dealing with zombies, I can now release to you the following strategy document.

"Please note that this document contains various redactions as it has been considered that some information contained therein must be redacted for the purpose of safeguarding national security."

It identified four alert levels; Ambient zombie level – business as usual, but be on the lookout for telltale signs, Enhanced activity level – confirmed zombie attacks on the population, Major outbreak – zombie infection level in excess of 1 percent, multiple sightings across the city and Zombie pandemic level – concentrated outbreak, with infection levels over 30 percent.

The Guardian reported that the document included specific instructions for staff in the event of an attack including an annual training schedule for designated staff.

The document states that staff "fully qualified in zombie handling may qualify for partial exemption and accreditation in the training for handling pirate outbreaks and for spotting the difference between genuine hot air balloons and evil, giant, floaty space aliens."
