Homes of 1990s Stars

Hey, remember the 1990s? It was a time of many requests to “not go there,” and entreaties to “talk to the hand,” or simply a time to mindlessly chant “JER-RY! JER-RY!” over and over. Hey, remember the 1990s? It was a time of many requests to “not go there,” and entreaties to “talk to the hand,” or simply a time to mindlessly chant “JER-RY! JER-RY!” over and over.

The ‘90s don’t seem so long ago, but it was long enough ago for fortunes and careers to change: Vanilla Ice became a house flipper, while MC Hammer lost his house, shirt, and Hammer pants when he went broke.

Some ‘90s stars of pop culture were able to parlay their fame into continuing success, and so we see their mansions, estates, penthouses, and compounds pop up regularly on the market. Rommy Revson, the inventor of that definitive ‘90s hair accessory, the Scrunchie, seems to have done rather well for herself, considering she just put her Palm Beach, Fla., estate on the market for almost $4.4 million.

Of the following homes of ‘90s stars (most shown using photos provided by Realtor.com), most are located in California, but there are a few outliers in Idaho and Colorado. Click ahead to see them all.

Sweet Pamela Anderson is beloved for her red-swimsuited signature role on Baywatch, and is friend to both animals and rock stars. She's currently in the news because she's offering to lease her home in the celeb-studded Malibu Colony (where neighbors include Tom Hanks) for $75,000 a month, or $20,000 a week.

Anderson posted this introduction on rental site VRBO.com: "I'm traveling so much these days and am enjoying a lot more time in my native Canada with my family…I’m finally willing to share my masterpiece — what I’ve co-created with a handful of green architects and designers/inspired by my favorite architect Lautner — this is my humble stab at perfection…it’s a magical spot." The rental has access to Surfrider Beach, a saltwater pool with swim-up wet bar, and all of the home’s technology is controlled via iPads.

Old Bruno recently decided to put one of his Idaho estates on the market. He first bought this home back in 2003 and since then remodeled the house, overhauled the landscaping, and added a detached guest house and gym. The home sits on 20 acres overlooking Flying Heart Lake, and the property includes some of its own man-made ponds and streams. The home features a gas fireplace in the master suite and heated decks outside.

Cox recently rented a two-bedroom apartment on the 25th floor of Sierra Towers, which has been the home to many celebrities over the years, including Cox’s former “Friends” co-star, Matthew Perry. As noted on Realtor.com, this property is so appealing to celebrities because it’s a full-service building, with a 24-hour front desk, security, and valet.

The other ubiquitous show of the ‘90s, of course, was “Seinfeld,” which chronicled the hijinx of a group of self-absorbed New Yorkers and starred comic Jerry Seinfeld in the title role.

Earlier this year, Seinfeld listed his Telluride mansion on nearly 27 acres on the market, which he offered fully furnished. The renovated circa-1991 mansion has a wet bar, lofts, and a guest house. As for those beautiful natural surroundings, outdoor features include a 5,500-square-foot deck, which is an expanse bigger than many people’s actual homes. (“What is the deal with that?”) The property also includes hiking trails and a creek, and views of Sunshine and Wilson peaks.

As previously established in this space, the 1990s had its “Friends” and its “Seinfeld,” but for a certain demographic of the viewing audience, there was only one TV show: “Beverly Hills, 90210.” The role of sideburned upstanding citizen Brandon Walsh was played by the former teen dreamboat Jason Priestley.

In late summer, Priestly put his valley villa, which was built in 1990 and remodeled in 2005, on the market. The house didn’t sell and is now off the market. No word on whether the home’s failure to sell has anything to do with Priestley’s unusual art collection featured prominently on the walls in the listing photos, including a large painting of French bulldog smoking a cigar and a reproduction of the Grant Wood painting “American Gothic,” with the woman smoking a cigar.

No discussion of ‘90s pop culture is complete without bringing up boy bands, and no talk of boy bands can occur without including the Backstreet Boys. As Realtor.com noted, the grown-up boy band members are no strangers to the real estate market.

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean listed his Los Feliz Oaks Mediterranean home earlier this year, asking quite a bit more than he bought it for in 2001, which was $430,000 (it’s no longer on the market). The 1958 house has been updated with the requisite gourmet kitchen, an outdoor fireplace, and in case any next-generation boy band members happened to move in, a large lower bedroom was being used by A.J. as a studio.

Schwimmer’s mansion was built in 1926 by the same architects who designed the Beverly Hills City Hall, and it has been restored and updated to suit modern tastes. The house features a wood paneled library and a den finished with stone. The gated property includes a tennis court and a detached loft-style guest house, with a living room, kitchen, and bath.
