The weak economy may be scaring the fun out of Halloween.
A survey released by the National Retail Federation says fewer people will be celebrating the holiday, and they will be spending less too.
The retail trade group says about 158 million people plan to participate in Halloween activities this year, down from a high of 170 million a year ago.
Those celebrating Halloween expect to spend an average of $75.03 this year on items such as costumes, candy and decorations. That's down from an expectation of $79.82 last year, according to NRF.
A quarter of respondents said that the state of the economy would impact their Halloween plans, and of those people, 86 percent said they would spend less.
There have been other signs that American's are cutting their spending, and not just on Halloween.
