Chart of the Day: Airlines losing $78/minute today?

A massive storm is threatening to snarl Thanksgiving travel up and down the East Coast, and could cost airlines a pretty penny in the process.

Every minute of delay costs carriers $78.17, according to trade group Airlines for America. (By comparison, each minute of a passenger's time is worth about 66 cents, per the group's data).

Early reports suggest that the storm may not be nearly as bad as first feared, and major US airports had few if any delays as of Wednesday morning.

But some airlines weren't taking any chances.

As of 6 a.m. ET Wednesday, there were already 101 flight cancellations to, from or within the United States, compared to 168 for all of Tuesday, according to FlightAware.com.
