It's more legal drama for Apple and Samsung as the two companies battled it out in court Monday. Apple is accusing Samsung, once again for stealing smartphone designs and features.
It's not the first time the fierce rivals took their troubles to the courthouse. Two years ago, a jury ruled in Apple's favor awarding the company about $900 million based on patent violations.
This time, Apple is seeking $40 per device, or a total of up to $2 billion, from Samsung.
Scott Kessler, senior equity analyst at S&P Capital IQ, said the trial is not about money but about Apple protecting its future.
"Apple is doing its best to protect what they see as their inventions and their intellectual property and then I think secondarily they're really trying to make a statement that if companies are willing to kind of, copy or steal what Apple has created, the company is going to come back at them and come back at them pretty aggressively," said Kessler.
He said Apple is sending a message to companies around the world: "If suddenly you saw company after company after company copying and stealing related to Apple's intellectual property, suddenly Apple's market position and standing around the world probably would erode pretty significantly."
Samsung denies it stole Apple's secrets. It says it developed its own phones.
