Some small businesses in New York City are deciding to pay interns, local colleges and universities officials tell Crain's.

The paid-intern trend among some start-ups follows moves made by larger firms. While some have begun to pay interns, other companies have put their entire intern programs on hold. And the uncertainty is affecting thousands of college students in the city.
