CNBC "'Halftime Report" trader Joe Terranova scooped up shares of a coal stock that's fallen 60 percent this year.

In a move to shake things up in CNBC Pro's model-portfolio competition, the chief investment strategist at Virtus Investment Partners is choosing high beta names that could help him advance in the rankings.

"Shares of CONSOL Energy are extremely oversold," said Terranova, explaining that from a technical perspective, ticker CNX could see a relief rally in the days ahead.

During Tuesday's trading session, CNX hit an 11-year low, trading about 57 percent below its 200-day moving average.
