Stocks staged a stunning comeback from their lows Monday, but major averages remained in or within spitting distance of correction territory amid fears China's growth is slowing.
The Dow Jones industrial average briefly slumped more than 1,000 points at the open. At midday, the Dow was down about 150 points as bargain hunters stepped in.
