Twitter has cut off U.S. intelligence agency access to data analytics tools from its business partner, Dataminr, according to The Wall Street Journal.
Dataminr collects and analyzes public Twitter feeds and can be used to identify terrorist attacks as they're unfolding and uncover trends and sentiments that indicate political unrest, according to the Journal.
Twitter itself doesn't provide data-mining services directly, but it holds a 5 percent stake in Dataminr, which provides those services, the paper said.
The news follows a series of moves by Apple and other tech giants that havepitted the industry against government agencies in adebate over whether user privacy should be protected, even when protected data could be used to aid in national security investigations.
