Facebook glitch puts death notices on some user pages

Facebook users complained on social media Friday that profiles incorrectly showed their friends had died.

Affected profiles, including that of CEO Mark Zuckerberg, briefly displayed a blue banner with a flower that read, "We hope the people who love [name] will find comfort in the things others share to remember and celebrate his life."

"For a brief period today, a message meant for memorialized profiles was mistakenly posted to other accounts," a spokesperson said. "This was a terrible error that we have now fixed. We are very sorry that this happened and we worked as quickly as possible to fix it."

It's not immediately clear what caused profiles to become erroneously memorialized.
