Millionaire Homes Mark Carney Can Afford

On top of cramming for his U.K. citizenship test, incoming Bank of England Governor Mark Carney faces a hunt for a family home in London, now details of his 250,000 pound ($406,000) housing allowance are known.

Luckily for Carney, the allowance, which CNBC calculates will be 2,548 pounds per week after tax, will be enough for a 5-bed property for himself, wife and four children in one of the more exclusive districts of England's expensive capital.

Should he wish to rent in prime central London - a retail estate term for the priciest areas in the middle of the city - 2,250 pounds per week could get him a 5-floor period house in Knightsbridge, like the one below:

Ovington Gardens, Knightsbridge

Knightsbridge is home to some of London's richest residents and houses in the district sell for millions or tens of million pounds. This townhouse is stucco-fronted and Grade II listed, meaning it is judged to be of special architectural interest. Unusually for inner London, it features a patio garden, as well as four double bedrooms and a double reception room. Attractions nearby include luxury department store Harrods, plus Hyde Park.

Or, for an extra 250 pounds a week, Carney could upgrade to this 3,000-square townhouse in Kensington, which comes with five double bedrooms as well as a terrace and patio garden:

Sheffield Terrace, Kensington

Greenery in the area includes Kensington Gardens, which inspired J.M. Barrie's classic children novel Peter Pan, and schooling options include Hill House, a private elementary school which is popular with international parents and famed for its eccentric uniform.

However, Carney may instead choose to imitate many other London professionals and live outside central London, in order to secure a bigger house and garden for his family:

Chargate Close, Burwood Park, Walton-On-Thames

Set in Walton-on-Thames in leafy Surrey, this modernized house is on the market for 2,065 pounds per week, and comes with a barbeque area, conservatory and heated swimming pool. Should Carney wish to relax after a busy day at the Bank of England, the house also boasts both a bar and a games room with a full-size pool table.

Alternatively, Carney could opt for the property below, which is set in an acre of land in Weybridge's prestigious St George's Hill estate, also in Surrey.

Camp End Road, Horseshoe Ridge, St George's Hill, Weybridge

Secured behind electric gates, the house offers panoramic views across the estate, and is convenient for upmarket sporting facilities including the St George's Hill golf and tennis clubs.
