Stanley McChrystal, the retired four-star general who was the commanding officer of coalition forces in Afghanistan, offers battle-tested leadership lessons for the C-Suite in his long-awaited new book, "My Share of the Task: A Memoir."
It's not the story he thought he would tell – at least not now.
In 2010, an embarrassing article in Rolling Stone magazine, in which he and his aides made disparaging remarks about Obama administration officials, forced McChrystal to resign. Instead of trying to settle scores, the former general offers readers an extraordinary story about the war against terror groups including al Qaeda.
In an interview on CNBC, McChystal talks about his book and offers advice to those in the corporate world on how to successfully manage and how to build a great team – hint, he quotes Albert Einstein to make his point.
He also addresses what he calls the lack of leadership in D.C., saying the politicians have lost sight of their mission AND as a CNBC bonus - he reviews "Zero Dark Thirty," the new fictional movie by Kathryn Bigelow about the team that tracked and killed Osama bin Laden.
The book has been met with huge praise – one reviewer saying "Stanley McChrystal has written the finest military memoir of his generation." Another – Steve Jobs biographer Walter Isaacson calls it a "Brilliant book about leadership wrapped inside a fascinating personal narrative."
