Apple or Samsung: Who’s Cooler Now?

Apple's spending on research and development suggests that it has plenty of coolness left in its future, Josh Brown of Fusion Analytics said Monday.

"Look at their R&D budget. It's actually spiked. It's actually higher than any point, and that points to future coolness factors, future innovation," he said on CNBC's "Fast Money."

The company increased its R&D spending by $1 billion in fiscal year 2012 to $3.4 billion, according to its 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Brown argued that number would bode well for Apple.

"It's not as though they've just ceded this territory and said, 'OK, go ahead, guys. Do whatever you want.' They're still going for it, and I think it's a little bit early to count this company out in terms of coolness," he said.

Recent news reports have found that Apple's iPhone has been losing market share to the likes of Samsung.

SkyBridge Capital's Anthony Scaramucci said that Apple lost some of its "cool factor" with the death of co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, but added that the company's stock continued to look attractive.

"If you're a value buyer, you want to buy Apple here," he said.

TheStreet CIO Stephanie Link offered a theory for declines in Apple's share price.

"I think that the investors are leaving Apple and going to Facebook and LinkedIn and Amazon," she said. "I think that's why you have this support there. It's a clear rotation."
