Amazon.com shares rose sharply in after-hours trading after the company reported a 22 percent increase in revenue to $21.27 billion. Earnings came in at 21 cents per share. For the first quarter, Amazon forecast sales of $15 billion to $16.6 billion. (Click here for after-hours quote)

Broadcom, meanwhile, was down in late trading. The communications chip maker posted earnings of 76 cents per share, three cents ahead of estimates, on net revenue of $2.08 billion. First-quarter revenue is forecast to come in at $1.9 billion, plus or minus 4 percent. Broadcom also raised its dividend 10 percent. (Click here for after-hours quote)

Shares of Chesapeake Energy are soaring in extended hours trading, after the company announced co-founder, CEO and president, Aubrey McClendon, has agreed to retire from the company on April 1, 2013. (Click here for after-hours quote)

Home builder Ryland jumped in late trading after reporting fourth-quarter earnings from continuing operations of 56 cents per share, on revenue of $440.1 million, both beating forecasts. The company said its backlog increased 61.4 percent in the quarter from a year earlier. (Click here for after-hours quote)

Shares of insurer ACE were lower in extended hours trading after super storm Sandy hurt fourth quarter earnings and the company projected an operating profit of $6.60 and $7.00 per share for the full year, below analyst forecasts. (Click here for after-hours quote)
