Blucora was the biggest gainer on the Russell after the online tax preparer posted better-than-expected earnings and handed in a positive forecast.
What's leading the S&P 500 on this record day? Advanced Micro Devices surged to lead the index's gainers and is up about 40 percent over the past week. The global semiconductor company, the target of positive rumors, is also the best performer in the S&P 500 semiconductor sector year-to-date.
Stocks at 52-week highs include AIG after the insurance company posted better-than-expected earnings and a loss ratio that fell to 97.3 versus 102.1 a year ago.
TJX Companies and Costco were among stocks hitting new historic highs.
Credit-card companies also surged to historic highs including American Express and Master Card.
What's not working today?
Bed, Bath & Beyond fell after Oppenheimer cut its rating on the home goods retailer to "perform" from "outperform."
And Facebook fell more than 1 percent.
