Amazon aims to release a video streaming device for this holiday season, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
The TV device will offer media and gaming apps. Amazon set a deadline for the middle of October for the app developers, the Journal said. The set-top box will be another vehicle to deliver Amazon's existing streaming video services, which has been expanded lately.
Last week, Amazon announced a launch of a new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX with a high-res screen. The new tablet will have an 8-megapixel camera and will be priced at $379, which is 25 percent more than the previous model.
The company does not make money on the devices, but Amazon hopes to gain more users for its core business—delivering content, like e-books, movies and music, CEO Jeff Bezos told CNBC last week.

An Amazon spokesman declined to comment, the Journal said.
