IBM finds Watson not so elementary: Report

Three years ago, IBM's Watson supercomputer beat all the human contestants in "Jeopardy," and the company has made the project a top priority.

But revenues have been far short of expectations, The Wall Street Journal reports, citing transcripts from an October conference call.

The transcripts say Chief Executive Virginia Rometty has told executives she hopes Watson will generate $10 billion in annual revenue within 10 years, but the project had total revenues of less than $100 million as of late October, the newspaper reports.

Still, an IBM spokesman told the Journal. "IBM is making excellent progress with clients and with partners in advancing Watson, and we are excited about Watson's future as a cloud service and as technology that will change lives."

A person familiar with the matter also said IBM is planning to make a major announcement about Watson on Thursday, according to the Journal.
