Ford Motor Co. must remove nearly all of the toxic paint sludge trucked from its former Mahwah plant—one the largest auto plant in the world—and dumped in Rockland County, NorthJersey.com reported Saturday.
The $7.5 million cleanup would be the second at the site in Ramapo, N.Y., NorthJersey.com reported. Residents in a neighborhood in Ringwood, N.J., that is home to a 500-acre Superfund site want federal officials to follow New York State's lead and order the complete removal of the toxic pain sludge in their neighborhood.
The site in Ringwood was the subject of a 2010 HBO documentary, Mann v. Ford, that chronicled rare cancers and other health problems suffered by the Ramapo Mountain Indians who inhabit the area. The documentary followed an in-depth investigation by The Record, the print publication of NorthJersey.com, in 2005 that led to the relisting of the Ringwood site on the federal Superfund list.
Both areas were dumping grounds for Ford waste contractors in the 1960s and 1970s.
