After-hours buzz: JCPenney, Autodesk, Nordstrom & more

Check out which companies are making headlines after the bell Thursday:

JCPenney - The clothing retailer posted a loss of $1.16 on sales of $2.80 billion, topping estimates for a loss of $1.25 a share on sales of $2.71 billion. In addition, the company said it expects second-quarter same-store sales rising mid-single digits. Shares spiked higher in extended-hours trading.

Stocks end near lows in 2-day selloff, Dow declines 1%

Autodesk - The computer software company reported earnings of 32 cents a share, excluding one-time items, on revenue of $593 million, easily topping estimates for 21 cents a share on sales of $569 million. In addition, the company handed in better-than-expected current-quarter revenue guidance, sending shares higher in extended-hours trading.

Nordstrom - The department store chain reported earnings of 72 cents a share, on revenue of $2.84 billion. Analysts expected the company to post earnings of 68 cents a share on sales of $2.87 billion. In addition, the company reaffirmed its full-year earnings guidance. Shares jumped sharply in extended-hours trading.

Rackspace - The IT hosting company hired Morgan Stanley to seek strategic options, according to a report. Shares spiked following the report, shortly before the closing bell, and continued to rise in extended-hours trading.

Verizon - Shares gained in extended-hours trading after billionaire investor Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and Third Point took up new stakes in the telecom company, according to a quarterly 13F filing.

Meanwhile, Berkshire Hathaway dissolved stakes in General Motors, Starz and Phillips 66, and increased positions in Wal-Mart.
