BlackBerry CEO John Chen said the release of Apple's iPhone 6 could be good for the struggling smartphone maker as the company focuses on its enterprise business and its ability to manage multiple platforms.

"We hope that we will be able to manage everything and the customer will see us as a very robust platform," Chen said at Re/code's Code Conference on Wednesday. "I view that [the iPhone 6] as a positive, not a negative … I want more and more devices out there."

Chen has struggled to rebrand the company and move it beyond its reliance on smartphones, a concept it pioneered.

He said its new Z3 device is just one small part of BlackBerry's overall product turnaround plan and said the device's sales will not change the "big picture."

It's estimated that BlackBerry's share of the smartphone market will drop to 0.8 percent this year, then to 0.3 percent in 2018, research firm International Data Corp. said earlier on Wednesday.

Despite analysts' grim expectations for sales, Chen said he expects the company to be profitable sometime after February of next year.

BlackBerry reported a net loss of $423 million, or 80 cents a share, for the fourth quarter ended March 1. That compared with a year-earlier profit of $98 million, or 19 cents a share.

"We are in the tail end of our restructuring process," Chen said, adding that he does not have plans to downsize the company.

A former CEO at Sybase, Chen was appointed to his post in November.
