Airbnb has been sued by 21 anonymous New Yorkers who hope to prevent the home-sharing website from turning over their personal information to the state's attorney general's office, the New York Post reports.
After a court battle, Airbnb in May said it would comply with a revised subpoena from New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman in his probe of illegal hotel operations in New York City. At issue is a city law that prohibits residents of multiple-dwelling buildings to rent out their apartments for any period of time less than 30 days unless they are also present in the apartment.
The anonymous John and Jane Does have filed suit under the name "New Yorkers Making Ends Meet in the Sharing Economy" and are seeking to stop Airbnb from turning over their names, email addresses, telephone numbers, social media accounts and tax identification numbers, according to the attorney Adam Leitman Bailey. The suit also claims Airbnb changed its privacy terms without notifying hosts.
Airbnb told the paper it will withhold the renters' info until a court decides the next step. A spokesman for Schneiderman's office declined to comment.
