Toys R Us said Monday that it will hire 45,000 seasonal employees this holiday, the same number it did in 2013.

The employees will be spread out at its stores and distribution centers, more than doubling the retailer's typical workforce. Approximately 2,000 of these workers will go to work at the company's 200 Toys R Us Express locations, which is also consistent with the past few years, a Toys R Us spokeswoman said.

Seasonal employees typically work between 16 and 20 hours a week, and the company retained 20 percent of these workers for year-round employment in 2013.

"Ensuring we are fully staffed with knowledgeable employees is integral as we look to fulfill our customers' needs whenever, wherever and however they choose to shop," the spokeswoman said.

Toys R Us is in the midst of a three-pronged transformation strategy to recover the market share it's lost to discounters such as Wal-Mart and Amazon over the past few years. As part of its turnaround plan, Toys R Us is making a big in-store push this holiday, which includes making its aisles easier to navigate, cutting down on checkout times and hiring knowledgeable staff to differentiate it from competitors.

It's also beefed up its loyalty program, making it easier for members to earn rewards.

Like Toys R Us, J.C. Penney and Target said last week that they will keep their hiring figures flat for 2014. Wal-Mart said it will add 60,000 seasonal employees—an increase of 10 percent from the prior year.
