Actor Matt Damon told CNBC Tuesday he'd like to be "Bourne" again—saying he hopes to reprise the Jason Bourne character in a fifth installment of the popular movie franchise.
"I've wanted to do it for years. We're trying to figure out a story right now," Damon said on "Squawk Box" from the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York.
Damon starred in the first three "Bourne" movies. "The Bourne Identity," released in 2002, made $214 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. "The Bourne Supremacy," out two years later, made nearly $289 million, while "The Bourne Ultimatum" in 2007 pulled in almost $443 million worldwide.
After he left the franchise, it rebooted with actor Jeremy Renner as genetically enhanced CIA agent Aaron Cross in "The Bourne Legacy," which was released in 2012 and made $276 million worldwide.
Damon told CNBC his possible return as Jason Bourne would not mean the end of Renner's role, which would be "kind of a parallel" story.
While talks to re-engage Damon continue, a new "Bourne" movie with Renner was still "moving forward," series producer Frank Marshall told The Hollywood Reporter.
But with the next "Bourne" movie set for a July 2016 release by Universal, the question remains whether it would Damon and Renner teaming up or a Renner-only venture. (DISCLOSURE: Universal is owned by Comcast, which is also the parent company of CNBC and NBC.)
