The man who put Instagram on the social media map has landed a new side gig—as a member of Wal-Mart's board.

The retail giant announced on Monday that Kevin Systrom, who co-founded the photo sharing service, was appointed to its board of directors.

Systrom's appointment takes effect immediately, Wal-Mart said, adding that he would also serve on the company's committees on technology, compensation, eCommerce and governance.

Wal-Mart Chairman Rob Walton said in a statement that the company "is investing in e-commerce capabilities through talent, technology and fulfillment. Kevin's passion and deep knowledge of social media align with our focus to engage customers through our digital and physical channels."

Instagram was bought out by Facebook two years ago. The 30-year-old Systrom remains the company's CEO.
