Original content shows "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" have been been very successful for Netflix and now it's going after more of that content.

The streaming media company announced a deal with Adam Sandler to make four original motion pictures exclusively for Netflix subscribers. Terms of the deal haven't been disclosed, but the company said the films would have the characteristics of theatrical releases, with similar-size budgets.

"With a deal like this one with Sandler, Netflix has the chance to lock up premium content while they are on a very hot streak," said Jeremy Rosenberg, head of digital at Allison & Partners.

Earlier this week, Netflix announced it also will be releasing the sequel to "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" at the time as its released in select IMAX theaters.

"Netflix has been more aggressive in establishing itself as a top-tier content player. They have moved from being an early disruptor of the video store model to a modern disruptor of the studio model," said Rosenberg.

It's clear Netflix is carving a deep original content path, however, one should keep in mind that there's a big difference between a series and a movie. Viewers of a film are engaged for two hours, while a series can hold an audience's attention on a weekly basis.
