New York City's stylish set will no longer be headed to Lincoln Center for its biannual fashion week.
According to media reports, IMG will need to find a new home for the event come September, after the Supreme Court of the State of New York Count ruled Lincoln Center cannot renew its contract.
New York City Parks Advocates had argued the event was taking away public space from, well, the public, by setting up on Damrosch Park, an area of greenery on the Lincoln Center compound.
"Damrosch Park belongs to the City of New York, not Lincoln Center," the group's Geoffrey Croft told the New York Post.
And, according to the ruling, the court agrees, saying the park belongs to the city, even though it is maintained and operated by the Lincoln Center. As a result, the Parks Department must approve how the park is used.
"Lincoln Center has been a great home for the past five years and we look forward to another world-class season this February," IMG said in a statement. "However, as the fashion industry continues to evolve, IMG has been actively looking for a new home for NYFW that gives our designers and partners the best possible environment to share their creative visions. We look forward to sharing more details on our new home soon."
New York Fashion Week first moved to Lincoln Center in September 2010, after a long stint at Bryant Park. It relocated from that midtown spot to the Upper West Side when, in a similar vein, critics argued the event was compromising public space.
Hudson Yards, an area under development on Manhattan's West Side, is expected to be the new home for Fashion Week upon completion. But that venue isn't expected to be finished until 2018.
