Close but no cigar? Musk shares rocket crash images

When other companies' products crash and burn, rarely do CEOs tweet about them. But we all know Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk isn't an ordinary CEO.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket had a successful launch last week, but the craft took a hard landing into a floating barge. How hard? New images released by Musk over Twitter show it was pretty rough. The rocket burst into flames when it hit the platform.

Musk tweeted the images to Oculus VR CTO John Carmack, a storied computer game programmer.

Musk also tweeted a dramatic Vine clip of the crash landing:

Musk contends the hard landing was caused by the rocket's lack of hydraulic fluid. SpaceX used last week's launch as a way to test the feasibility of a reusable rocket, which would dramatically cut down the costs of space travel.
