Apple may be designing its own electric vehicle.

Several hundred employees are working to create an Apple electric car, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. The project, code-named "Titan," has yielded early designs that resemble a minivan, the Journal said.

Apple declined CNBC's request to comment on the report.

Apple may not complete the project, but the labor force behind it indicates the enormous technology company is serious, the Journal said, though putting a vehicle on the market is still years away.

The Financial Times earlier on Friday reported that Apple has been hiring automotive experts to work in a secret research lab.
