The Iowa Supreme Court is to hear arguments Wednesday on whether doctors can keep providing abortion pills via telemedicine systems, NBC affiliate WHO-TV reported.

The case was heading to the state's highest court after a district court ruled that the Iowa Board of Medicine could ban the distribution of abortion pills through telemedicine systems.

Planned Parenthood attorney Mike Falkstrom will argue that the district court's ruling violates state and federal laws, as abortion is a fundamental right, according to the report.

Iowa is the only state in which Planned Parenthood has implemented telemedicine abortions.
