Bad news, doughnut lovers! Prices are soaring

It got more expensive to have a sweet tooth last month.

In March, an index of fresh sweetrolls, coffeecakes and doughnuts saw the sharpest rise in more than 15 years from the month before, rising 2.8 percent on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to new Consumer Price Index data.

This was the biggest increase since April 1999, when this index jumped 6.4 percent.

It has been a roller coaster ride in the grocery aisle for this sweets category. In February, it fell 2.9 percent, the sharpest decline in more than 15 years. And in January, the metric rose 0.6 percent.

Overall food at home dropped 0.5 percent in last month—the sharpest decline since April 2009 in the thick of the recession—and the cereals and bakery products was the only major grocery store food group to tick up last month.
