An airline seat designed for overweight passengers or travelers with small children is gaining some international praise.
One-and-a-half times wider than a standard seat, the SANTO (Special Accommodation Needs for Toddlers and Overweight Passengers) seat looks to accommodate both larger passengers and booster seats. The design aims to use extra space at the back of airplane cabins, according to a release from The Crystal Cabin Awards, a Hamburg, Germany-based competition that judges products for aircraft cabins.

The chair—developed by engineering company SII Deutschland—took the top prize for passenger comfort at the competition on Wednesday. SII Deutchland did not immediately return CNBC's request for comment, and it was unclear if or when the seat will appear in commercial jets.
"The seat is ideal for overweight passengers and for passengers with small children. For these passengers, the seat is safer than a standard seat," according to a release on the competition's website.
The product comes as some airlines have started charging the cost of two seats for overweight passengers or travelers with small children.
