Intel just scolded eBay's CEO (sort of)

Intel wants eBay CEO John Donahoe to remain a company director. But the chipmaker hopes he starts showing up at a few more board meetings.

"In 2014, the attendance of Mr. John Donahoe fell below expectations of Intel directors," the Santa Clara, California-based company wrote in a proxy filing for shareholders on Thursday. "However, it is our strongly held view that Mr. Donahoe should be re-elected."

Donahoe, who's served on the Intel board since 2009, had a rather busy 2014. After fighting an effort by activist investor Carl Icahn to split up eBay and PayPal, the company finally agreed to the breakup in October. Perhaps that's why he made it to less than 75 percent of the 19 board and board committee meetings last year.

Evidently, his attendance has improved since the eBay-PayPal decision was made.

"Mr. Donahoe's attendance record in 2015 at formal meetings has already returned to historic levels," according to the filing. "We believe it is contrary to the interests of the stockholders and Intel to reject his re-election on account of one year's special circumstances."

Donahoe should have more time on his hands in the near future, as he's stepping down from the CEO role after the split.

Intel said it conducts annual evaluations of each of its 11 board members and makes nomination recommendations to shareholders. The company's annual meeting will be held on May 21. A request for comment from Donahue, sent to eBay, was not returned.
