Flipboard CEO Mike McCue said on Wednesday that he personally loves Twitter, but would not comment on whether acquisition rumors were true.

"If you build something that has value to users, and you have users who are coming in every single day by the millions, these rumors are naturally going to happen," he said in an interview with CNBC's "Squawk Alley."

The news reader app company was reported to be in talks to be acquired by social media giant Twitter. McCue spoke to CNBC in an exclusive interview from the Code Conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

"We have a very close partnership with Twitter," he said. "We have promoted tweets on Flipboard, so you are going to see us do more and more with Twitter over time."

McCue said that his company is focusing on promoting content as opposed to apps.

"Brands understand how important it is to create high-quality content and have it find its appropriate audience. We're seeing very high-quality brands like Starbucks, Whole Foods, Porsche on Flipboard building that content and getting it out to our users."
