Portions of Southwest Airlines' website are currently unavailable, the company confirmed on its website and social media.

"Our sale is causing high demand right now so you may experience difficulty on Southwest.com. We're working to fix the issue so please try back again soon!" it wrote on its website.

The company posted its first tweet citing technical problems earlier on Wednesday and began monitoring the situation closely around 1 p.m. ET.

Brandy King, communications director at the airline, told CNBC in an email unexpected activity due to an ongoing sale is partly to blame.

"In anticipation of high Customer demand, we added capacity to Southwest.com before launching our current WOW sale," she wrote. "The response from Customers exceeded expectations, and our Teams are quickly working to correct any impact to website functionality. We apologize for any inconvenience and have an intent focus on getting Southwest.com running at full speed as soon as possible. If a Customer is unable to manage their travel online, we encourage them to call 1-800-I-FLY-SWA for assistance."
