Twitter and Salesforce.com continue to discuss a possible deal, sources told CNBC on Tuesday.

Twitter's board of directors remain split right now between those who want to sell the company and those who don't. Twitter is possibly going to try to get a deal done with Salesforce in the near term, sources said.

Last week, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told CNBC the social media platform has challenges and called Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey a "good friend." Benioff didn't indicate whether he was interested in buying the company.

Twitter has also had discussions with Walt Disney, Microsoft, and Alphabet's Google.

Twitter's stock is down more than 24 percent year-to-date.
