Apple needs 'a little more time' for airpods

Apple's wireless earbuds will see a shipping delay, the company told CNBC on Wednesday.

"The early response to AirPods has been incredible," Apple told CNBC. "We don't believe in shipping a product before it's ready, and we need a little more time before AirPods are ready for our customers."

AirPods are listed as available in "late October" on Apple's website, so it is unclear whether there is a new timeline for the product.

The AirPods, a wireless version of Apple's hallmark white earbuds, claim to be more power efficient than Bluetooth devices, thanks to a special communications chip. The $159 device came alongside a new phone with no 3.5-millimeter headphone jack.

But after their debut in September, reviewers complained the AirPods "look odd" and had occasional glitches. Audio experts told CNBC that launching AirPods gives Apple a first shot at a new market, even if the technology is still in the early stages.
