Analyst Sees Hopeful but Uncertain Future for Yahoo
Gene Munster, senior research analyst from Piper Jaffray, discussed his opinions for the outlook of Yahoo and its new CEO Jerry Yang on “Morning Call.”
“The strength of Yahoo’s brand has declined,” said Munster. “They really need to get part of social networking, but more importantly, embrace the trend of the internet—come up with more tools for advertisers, and eventually create products that can compete themselves to embrace this trend.”
He added that Yahoo’s theme in the meantime should be: “If you can’t beat them, then join them."
Questions as to whether Yang has the personality to see Yahoo come through, Munster commented, “The next couple of years, it’s going to be the 'Jerry Yang Show.'"
Munster related Jerry Yang’s take over as CEO to Steve Job’s return to Apple in 1997, but added, “This is probably not going to be another Apple from 1997. It’s the right move from yahoo, but a far cry from what Apple did.”
