BMC Software Profit Rises, Tops Own Forecast

BMC Software reported a 34 percent rise in second-quarter profit and said it was winning more deals against its competitors.

BMC shares gained $1.07, or 3.18 percent, at $34.75 in after-hours trade; the stock had ended up 46 cents, or $1.38, at $33.68 during regular market hours on the New York Stock Exchange.

Net income in its fiscal second-quarter ended Sept. 30 was $78 million, or 39 cents per share, compared with $58 million, or 28 cents per share, a year earlier.

Excluding special items, BMC earned $96 million, or 48 cents per share, which was above its own forecast for earnings per share of 39 cents to 44 cents.

Revenue rose 9 percent to $421 million in the quarter.
