Well, this year, the playbook has changed. Sorry, early bird. It's the late bird that's going to get the worm this year.

Retailers are going to be pulling out all the stops this weekend — the last weekend before Christmas — with everything from jaw-dropping markdowns to round-the-clock openings in a last-ditch attempt to save the season.

Barneys and Saks are among the slew of retailers offering 75-percent off, Dana Telsey, of Telsey Advisory Group, told CNBC.

And, with a storm starting to blanket the Northeast, analysts say, expect to see stores react in real-time, with cobbled-together coupons.

"You will go in the stores and you will see coupons that are photocopied to say 'Take another 25 percent off,'" Barclays Capital analyst Robert Drbul told Reuters.

Retailers including department-store operator Kohl's and discount giant Wal-Mart Stores are extending their store hours, and some Macy's stores are going to be open 24 hours in the days before Christmas so shoppers have ample time to scoop up the sales.
